Harambee for Kenya Project

The District will be taking part in a work-based project in Kenya in the summer of 2009.  The aim is to leave a lasting legacy and to provide support to the Street Children in Kenya by completing a project that will help to give the them a purpose in life.

The project will be to assist with the construction of a safe house and rehabilitation centre in the Kisii area (West of Nairobi) where street children are encouraged to visit and stay for as long as they need to.

The young people will receive food and shelter and will be taught life skills and given an education so that when they leave, they have a constructive role to play in the community.

Our project will also include interaction with the young people to show them that Scouting can provide a way to have a better life.

Lewisham Manor is part of the Scout County of Greater London South and is a fully registered Youth Charity (the charity number can be found at the end of this handbook).

The party will consist of a team of young people between the ages of 16 and 20 who will be supported by an experienced team of adult leaders.  The names of all the adult leaders appear later in this handbook.

We will be departing for Kenya at the end of July 2009 for two weeks.

We have been given a stock of Handmade Crafts to sell. Our project will keep 50% of the proceeds and the other 50% will go to the Harambee Street Kids charity.
